Bay Ferries Beam Strengthening St. John, New Brunswick
Project Description: The crossing between St. John, New Brunswick and Digby, Nova Scotia on the New Brunswick side at Bay Ferries Terminal in St. John, New Brunswick was struck by one of its ferries a few years back. Two of the existing beams became deficient once corrosion and obvious concrete deterioration set in.
Solution: The two ninety linear foot damaged beams were prepared by chipping loose concrete, grinding and cleaning the exposed rebar before injecting with Tyfo 111 epoxy injection system and concrete patching. The pre stressed concrete beams were then strengthened by applying layers of the Tyfo Fibrwrap SCH-41 carbon fiber system longitudinal and in the stirrup direction.
Summary: The project was completed in only two weeks from start to finish. It took one week to erect the scaffolding in place and the other week to apply the Tyfo FRP system. There was no interference with operations and was completed on a timely cost effective basis.
