Project Description: The parking facility had to undergo some major restoration in 2010. One repair that was specified by the engineer was the injection and wrapping of a major crack in the second storey floor slab. The engineer wanted the crack injected and then a FRP installation across the crack to eliminate the condition in future. He also wanted a 2 hour UL rated fire protection (AFP) over the FRP installation.
Solution: This work was done in October when the weather was very cold. The FRP was installed before the arrival of the colder weather; however, the AFP was installed when temperatures were near 32 degrees at night. After the AFP installation, the area was enclosed and heated overnight.
Summary: This installation is the first AFP exterior application in the Chicago area. The owner had a deadline that would not be compromised. Obviously, it would have been preferred to perform this work under warmer conditions.
