Project Description: The building suffered some poor quality work during construction. Several beams had poor concrete consolidation and there was exposed reinforcing steel in a lot of areas. Consequently, several beams required extensive structural repairs. These repairs involved patching voids, shotcrete poured in place of concrete, and fiber wrap.
Solution: The strengthening scheme involved using carbon composites in the areas of flexural deficiencies and glass composites in the areas of shear deficiencies. The project had a performance specification giving the additional flexural and shear capacities of the composites. There were some surface repairs to be carried out after inspection by the engineer.
Summary: This is a good example of using various repair schemes to solve a problem. Fiber wrap was used in some areas and other concrete repairs in other areas of the building. In some areas more than one method was used. For example, steel bolts and fiber wrap were applied to increase the shear capacity of some of the beams.
