Project Description: The bridge carrying M-33 over I-75 in Michigan had some piers in distress with significant cracking. There were 5 piers that required crack injection and/or composite application. The total area was approximately 300 square feet.
Solution: The concrete piers were injected and protected with two layers of glass composite. Some piers were wrapped full height and others only partial height; other piers were injected only. A change order was issued to repair one of the pier caps that was discovered during the work to be in immediate need of repair.
Summary: The installation of fiber wrap over concrete repairs is an ideal long term solution for protection of the repair area. The fiber wrap seals the area and eliminates the possibility of further corrosion. The composites were painted after the installation.
