NRG Reinforced Concrete Chimney Repair San Francisco, CA
Project Description:
Stack deterioration was noticed during a 2008 visual observation from ground level by the facility staff. The initial investigation noted that there were cracks and exposed rebar at the upper levels of the stack. Although there were no reported incidents of material falling, staff and public safety became a concern.
A more detailed inspection revealed that the upper portion of the stack showed the most severe deterioration however the condition rapidly improved as the inspection moved lower. Several repair schemes were presented to provide different levels of repair ranging from doing nothing and continuing to monitor the stack for further deterioration to removal and replacement of the deteriorated section.
The Fibrwrap option, consisting of application of one vertical layer and one horizontal layer of the Tyfo® SCH (carbon) System to the exterior of the deteriorated portion of the stack, was selected based on the overall benefit and value provided to the stack. The Fibrwrap System was applied to the top 75 feet of the stack over the course of five days by crews working double shifts in order to complete the project on time.
