Project Description: The new Arts Building on the University of Iowa campus incorporated a cantilevered structure over a man-made pond. The main support for the cantilever is a slender concrete pier that was exhibiting early cracking at the top bearing location. The cracks were caused by poor detailing of the horizontal rebar ties.
Solution: The carbon-based Tyfo® SCH-41 Composite System was utilized to provide the proper confinement strength to the top of the pier and prevented further cracking.
Summary: The application was concurrent with construction of the cantilever structure and no stoppage of work was required. The installed Tyfo® SCH-41 Composite System was then painted to match the aesthetics of the structure.
